I knew in college that I couldn't get away from music because it has always been my lifeline. After getting my degrees in voice and instrumental music, I became a band and choir director, but during that time, I never stopped singing and playing piano on the side.
Then, as with every new parent, my life was greatly changed in December of 1997, when my twins, Jonah and Hannah, were born. My husband, Tim, was unwavering, but I was deeply hurt by Jonah's diagnosis of Down Syndrome. I think every parent hopes that their child will inherit all of their best attributes and more, and I prayed for my children to be healthy and whole. In the uncharted territory of mental and physical handicaps, I had so much to understand and learn; and God was always there. One of the songs on this album, "Miracle", is about my struggle with Jonah's diagnosis, but it also speaks to the greater truth that each day of our lives is a miracle of love.
When the twins were 11 months old, we moved to Houston and soon found our church. And not long after that my prayer that God would use me was answered. I am grateful to be able to share the music in my heart week after week, and I count it as an honor and a privilege.
Many of the songs that I've written during my 9 years of music ministry at Cypress Creek Christian Church are based on sermon scripture references. Sometimes, if there isn't already a song that complements the message, God will help me write one. Several of the selections on this album are "sermon songs". Others are based on life experiences -- the struggles and joys we encounter on our faith journey.
Over the years, loved ones at Cypress Creek have asked me, "Who else gets to hear these songs?" My answer was always, "Just us!" Well, it seems God has a different plan and now, I can share them with you!
Thank You, God.
